AGENT YORK
ONE OF THE GOOD GUYS

EARTH AU NAME • Garrett York
RESIDENCE • Queens
JOB • Security Guard/Bouncer
Character Information
Earth AU:

  • York is most recently a bouncer who works at the Lotus nightclub in Manhattan. He comes into this job after a stint as a longshoreman, and before this a tour of the country by train. He had originally worked on the oil rigs in Texas.

  • York is affable and easygoing, and will surely be a fast friend to anyone who decides to approach him for a conversation. He enjoys parties, as well, though he might withdraw after a period of time being there to get some time alone.

  • York shows signs of being ADHD, but has never been tested for this disorder. He sometimes has trouble expressing himself verbally, but makes up for that by being talkative in a careless way, babbling until he gets his thoughts through—or until someone helps him do so.

  • Similarly to what happens in canon, York has suffered an accident that caused damage to his eye. In the case of his Earth AU, however, it was a forklift battery that blew up in his face. For this reason, his eye scarring looked a bit different, until regains caused the scar to change to its canon permutation.

Canon:
  • Though York comes from a comedy canon, it can be kind of dark in places. Themes that are present in York's canon include genocide, war, ethics, sacrifice, and torture.

  • York is a soldier, having been recruited to Project Freelancer for unknown reasons. My headcanon is that the soldiers who joined the Project were under some kind of review or in danger of court martial, and were able to join the Project to avoid consequences.

  • York's eye injury was the result of his teammates using a live grenade on the training room floor. The grenade went off right beside his helmet, shattering the visor. The scarring on his face is composed of lines that crisscross over his eye.

  • York's canon personality includes the decision to betray the Project in order to "do the right thing," a choice his Earth AU never had to make.

Physical:
  • For York's icons, I use both canon face and armored icons from the show, and pictures of Nick Bateman. Of course, Nick doesn't have the scarring on his face that York has. I'm working on getting his pictures changed out for art icons.

  • York's eye scarring looks different between his Earth AU and his canon self, a subject that is touched on above. In both cases, however, the eye is covered by a white cataract that blocks his vision in that eye.

  • York is heavily muscled, a result of his job being to lift and move cargo all day. He also works out in the morning, so he keeps his energy up throughout the day and keeps up his physique for his job.

  • Vital statistics:
     ○ Height: 6' (183 cm)
     ○ Weight: 225 lb (102 kg)
     ○ Hair: Brown
     ○ Eyes: Blue
     ○ Gender: Male
     ○ Race: European
  • York speaks in a standard American accent with a slight Southern twang (an Austin accent). This video contains a good example of his typical speaking voice.

  • York is slightly vain about his appearance, always keeping his body in peak condition and his hair gelled and coiffed. The fact that his eye is scarred beyond all repair is a sore point with him and he will not take teasing or comments about his eye gracefully.

Abilities:
  • Earth AU:
     ○ Vehicle repair and maintenance
     ○ Plumbing and HVAC
  • Canon:
     ○ Picking locks, including advanced technology
such as holographic and encrypted locks
     ○ Marksmanship
     ○ Hand-to-hand fighting
     ○ Equipment maintenance

History Wiki article
Personality  York has a good-natured outlook on life. His self-assurance in his abilities is obvious in everything he does, from the cocky way that he walks, to the way he teases his teammates, even during a stressful mission. Even so, he claims he’d rather rely on luck than skill, and ascribes a lot of his success to doing so. He doesn’t like to be seen as weak, or as a coward, and will go out of his way to prove that he is able to perform any task he puts his mind to. Even physical injury is sure to be downplayed, such as when he walked out of the infirmary early to take part in his latest assigned mission even despite the injury that caused partial blindness in his left eye.

York is a loyal friend. This extends even to members of the team he has just met, such as when he tried to warn Texas in their initial sparring match about the other Freelancers bringing live ammo onto the training floor. He sees the AIs as an extension of that team as well, and went out of his way to help North’s shy AI Theta to feel more welcome by requesting Delta speak to him and put him at ease, despite the fact that this broke the rules. This also appears to lead to loyalty to the Project itself, even as he starts to question the Director's methods. It's notable that after the disastrous training match that ended in his eye injury, he was punished by being knocked 4 places down the leaderboard, while those who broke the rules and brought live ammo in were rewarded by being moved up the leaderboard. He later questions why they ended up on the opposing side to police and military during the Sarcophagus mission, but nevertheless remains loyal to the Project.

York has a strong sense of moral duty, though his definitions of what is right or wrong may differ from others. When he finally learned about the torture of the Alpha AI, he joined Tex in attempting to rescue it. When their failure to carry out this objective leads to a life on the run, he puts his own welfare first, and isn’t above using his lock-picking skills to lift a few needed items from a local shop. He has no qualms with seeking revenge, either, and when he learns that he can help Tex kill Omega in retribution for his losing his eye, he's quick to join her mission. This, despite the fact that Maine was the one who threw the grenade, not Tex, Omega's partner.

York’s downfall is his pride. In the aftermath of his injury and AI implantation, he refuses to admit that carrying out his usual duties in his specialty of infiltration has now become difficult for him. His inability to cop to his temporary weakness ends up putting teammates and mission objectives in jeopardy. Years later, when he has learned to compensate for the problem, he brags about his “kick-ass” skills, as cocky as ever. Tender and contemplative moments are rare from him except in private, when he believes it is unlikely that they will be observed.

York's relationship—or lack thereof—with Carolina is a major part of his character development at his canon point. Although it's kept vague exactly how close they were, it's known that they met sometime before Project Freelancer was founded. It's clear they became fast friends, and the metal cigarette lighter she stole from him later becomes a token that symbolizes this relationship. York has an unfortunate tendency to assume he knows what Carolina is thinking and feeling and acts on these assumptions despite possible evidence that contradicts his opinion. His belief that she only cares about winning and being the best colors his views of why she trains so hard, even after they lose Agent Connecticut in a disastrous failed mission. As the Project fails and he and Carolina find themselves on opposing sides of the breakdown, he makes the unfortunate assumption that she will understand that he knows best for her, and will abandon her association with the Project based only on his word on what she should do. His unwillingness to explain to her what's going on leads to their estrangement, ending with Carolina throwing the lighter at him and leaving. By his canon point (years later), however, he has recorded a journal entry in which he has come to the conclusion that he now understands her motivations, and that he should let go of his obsessive desire to find her and rekindle their associations.

Physical description: York is a white male, with brown hair and blue eyes. He's physically imposing because of the constant workouts needed for his job. He is usually seen wearing Project Freelancer's golden-hued mechanical body armor. He has suffered an eye injury, leading to the appearance of several prominent scratches that cut across his eyelids, and a white cataract that covers his iris. York seems somewhat vain about his hair, always wearing it gelled even when he has recently been seen wearing his helmet.

Earth AU
Name: Garrett York

History: Garrett York was born October 21, 1986, in San Antonio, Texas. His mother was an administrator for a Fortune 500 company, leading a large department, a job which kept her quite busy. York's father was a pilot, and unfortunately his tendency to be a philanderer led to York's parents divorcing when York was a tender 8 years old. York's brother, Willem, was 3 years younger, and the two of them bonded during the time the divorce was taking place.

York was smart, but not in a book learning way, and his undiagnosed ADHD was a barrier to getting the high grades his mother wanted for him to get. Unfortunately, he was raised in a time when ADHD was still very poorly understood, and his mother didn't want to put a label on him that would cause problems with his schooling as he got older. His tendency to be more social than academic led to him barely graduating high school, a situation that greatly disappointed his mother, who wanted him to attend a prestigious university and move on to become a lawyer or doctor. York decided to instead attend community college, starting with an undeclared major. His bad study habits and busy social life led to him being dismissed from the college after 3 semesters of study.

York finally decided to go into a trade, and started out on the oil platforms off the shores of Texas. Willem was graduating high school at around this time, and he followed his mother's wishes and began a course of study in pre-med at Duke University. All this caused some friction between York and his brother, as well as palpable disappointment from his mother.  York entered a stage of hard rebellion, and began traveling the country by train, taking odd jobs here or there and renting a room for the 6 months or however long he decided to stay in that place. Eventually he landed in New York City while engaging in this lifestyle and got a job as a longshoreman, unloading ships at the docks just outside the population centers of the city. York found he absolutely loved New York's vibrant social scene, and he really liked the job he was doing, so he ended up remaining in New York for the next ten years.

In 2018, York suffered an accident while on the job, a situation where safety regulations were not being followed and York was the one in the cross hairs when the system failed. The situation involved a forklift that had not been inspected in several years. The battery wires had been jury-rigged, and the battery was heating up and showing signs that it may burst. However, neither York nor any of his coworkers paid attention to the situation because their bosses were constantly pressing for more work to be done in less hours. York noticed the wires on the battery of the forklift sparking and decided to go over with a wrench to disconnect them. However, the slightest touch to the battery system in the condition it was in caused the battery to begin to split on the side. A spray of battery acid hit York in the face. He immediately abandoned the work he was attempting to do and ran to the eye wash station, but because of the heat of the acid and its properties, he ended up with facial scarring and reduced vision in his left eye.

After this, York spent a short period of time on disability while he adjusted to life with only one well-functioning eye. However, he missed his work as a longshoreman too much to give it up. He was unable to gain work with the same employer, so he applied elsewhere to become a longshoreman once again. Content in continuing in his work as a manual laborer, he slowly began to rejoin the social scene he had missed out on while he was in recovery.

Personality: York is very much the same person in his earth AU as he is in canon, as far as his social proclivities, sense of humor, and easygoing nature. However, the aimlessness his life had suffered during the time after he was kicked out of community college has led to him being much less ambitious than he is in his canon permutation. This version of York has never learned to reverse engineer a technical marvel such as a holographic lock, nor did he suffer the indignity of his specialty becoming much harder after his eye injury. York also never met Carolina, or anyone like her who would captivate him in a romantic way like she did.

Most importantly, York was never assigned a mind-sharing logic AI as he was in canon. He never experienced the process of needing to learn how to share his headspace with a partner who can read his thoughts, and who experiences everything through the lens of both logical processes, and primal fear of the unknown. Because of this, York is not someone who thinks much about the affects of mental illness or the need to soothe someone who he has been placed in such close proximity. Contrariwise, York is very carefree and doesn't think much about what his future will hold.

Physical description: York looks the same as his canon description. The only difference is that his eye scarring looks a bit different because of the fact that the damage was caused by acid, not a grenade.

Awakening from surgery was pure agony.

When York had arrived in the ER, they had administered morphine for the time between his arrival and when he would go into surgery, later that day. The damage from the acid that had sprayed on his face needed to be debrided, so an hour or so later he was put under and sent into a surgical suite. The acid had burned and twisted the cornea of his eye and the flesh around it, and he had been told it was likely to leave a prominent scar.

Scarring he could deal with. Pain, not so much.

He groaned heavily and pressed the button to call the nurse to his side. He hadn't even tried to open his eye—the unbandaged one—yet. His facial wounds and the burnt skin left from the acid was leaving him in incredible pain. Parts of his mind were racing, thinking about his looks, the scarring, what would he look like, but no, it was time to think about pain right now.

Nobody came, at least not at the instant he pressed the button. He wasn't being restrained, so he gingerly got up from the gurney and headed to the tiny en suite bathroom. He didn't really know what he expected to see when he looked in the mirror—a thick padding of bandages were still wrapped around his left eye, the right barely peeking out from between the layers. The eye he could see seemed remarkably dull in color, different from its usual brilliant blue.

  40. Dead or Alive – York learns the Freelancer he's been tracking is Tex, not Carolina. Discouraged by this and realizing that he's holding onto her memory too tightly, he decides to let her memory go.

  41. Reunion – York is approached by Tex once again, this time for help getting into Wyoming's fortress. He agrees, after clarifying that he's cracking a holographic lock, which is much harder than an encyrpted lock.

Warnings: None. However, in the future York will regain the ability to pick locks and may decide after this that he wants in your character's room or other property. I will discuss with you should the occasion arise that he would choose to do this, but keep in mind it's a possibility.

[Out Of Character]

  • Backtagging: I prefer to play out what I can of a thread in a fairly timely manner. If it's looking like what is happening between our characters is going to have a major impact on their CR longterm, I'll keep backtagging for some months, but for the most part if it's beyond the current plot and it's not going much of anywhere I'm liable to lose interest.

  • Threadhopping: I'm all for this in network posts as long as things are open (i.e. there's no indication the transmission is private). For logs, I'd like to be advised you're going to do this, but will most likely be open to it.

  • Fourthwalling: No, thank you

  • Off limits: Rape/noncon

  • Warn first: I don't really have any triggers, though I am uncomfortable with elaborate descriptions of gore and such. Putting a cw in the subject line for anything upsetting should cover me.

[In Character]

  • Physical affection/b>: York will take this as a cue that a greeting hug upon every encounter is welcomed, so be sure you want to set the precedent. Kisses or flirting are also welcome.

  • Physical violence: York is skilled at hand-to-hand, having been second on the leader board at Project Freelancer partly because of his fighting skills. Beating him will be tricky, though definitely feasible for some. Please discuss injuring or killing him with me beforehand.

  • Romance: Sure, though it's hard to know how seriously he'll take it.

  • Use of telepathy/mind reading on this character: Yes. York is a bit of an open book at the best of times and has no reason to know how to defend himself from such abilities.
  • CRAU recognition: Discuss with me beforehand.

  • Facetwins: No thanks.
